Our Process

  • Application

Our Adoption Application is created to find an ideal match for our dogs and their potential owners. The list below are requirements you will need to fulfill before going forward in the application process.

-A vet reference must be provided to support a confirmed history of responsible pet ownership.

-If you rent you will need permission to adopt from your landlord.

-Three personal references we can contact for your background check.

-Talk to a trainer, dog walker, doggie daycare, etc. to have a plan in place for your dog's long-term happiness.

-Be sure to understand the breed of dog you are bringing into your home.

  • PROCESS

Once your application is submitted, our volunteers will review it. We will:

-Contact your landlord, if you rent

-Contact your Vet (Please give them permission to speak to us).

-We will talk to your references

-Contact you to discuss the animal of interest

    -Schedule a home visit (required)

Our approval process generally takes 2 to 7 days. The most common delay to approving an application is not having permission to speak to your Vet or being able to connect with your references.

  • Approval

Once your application is approved, we will setup a time for you to meet the dog you want to adopt. Our dogs are located in loving foster homes throughout New England. You must be willing to travel to their foster homes.

We adopt each pet to the first approved and available adopter. The dog of your choice cannot be held or reserved until after your application is approved. If the dog you want is adopted before your application is approved, we will help you select a new one. If you are interested in another pet, you do not have to fill out another application.

  • Adoption Fees and Contract

At the time of adoption, you must complete our adoption contract and provide payment of our adoption fees (check or PayPal). All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, are vaccinated for rabies, Bordetella & distemper, dewormed, tested for heart worm (negative) and Lyme disease, as well as treated for fleas and ticks prior to being adopted out.

    Dog Adoption Fees:

-Seniors- 7 years of age and older: $300

    -Adult dogs (1-7:) $350

    -Puppies (6 months – 1 year): $400

-Puppies (6 months and under) who are spayed/neutered: $425

  • After Adoption

Know that adopting from us will leave you and your dog with a great resource. The staff of The Dog House K9 Rescue have a lot of experience working with different dogs. We can help with leash training, house training, kennel training. We can recommend local trainers that will help you and your dog get on the same page.

A lot of our dogs come from rural areas and, other shelters. Some dogs may have intestinal parasites that we did not observe while in our care. Be prepared to de worm your dog if necessary. We also highly recommend getting your dog to a vet within the first two weeks of ownership.
We also recommend continuing with flea and tick and, heart worm prevention. If a medical concern arises, we may be able to help. Some conditions are not observed in a foster dog until they transition to a new home. We ask people to contact us at holmes@thedoghousede.com if the dog is in need of medical help. We cannot reimburse you for vet bills or guarantee the health of a dog.

Please email us post adoption if you need a copy of your new dogs medical records. holmes@thedoghousede.com

Contact us for approval of transfer or, to return the dog directly to us. No questions asked. We care deeply for our rescue dogs and, will find a new home for them.
